What to check in a teak door
- Seasoning: the timber must be kiln dried. Green wood shrinks and cracks after fitting.
- Heartwood: the darker heartwood is far more durable than pale sapwood.
- Grain and knots: look for even grain and no large loose knots or cracks.
- Joinery: panel doors should have tight mortise and tenon joints.
Caring for a teak door
Wipe it with a dry or slightly damp cloth. Doors exposed to direct sun and rain benefit from a fresh coat of polish every two to three years.
