Door Frames

A door is only as good as the frame it hangs in. The frame, known in most Indian homes as the chaukhat, carries the weight of the shutter, holds the hinges and lock strike, and is the part most exposed to wall moisture, floor mopping and termites. Choosing the right frame material for each room prevents the most common door problems: sagging, swollen bottoms, termite damage and doors that stop closing properly.

Types of door frames

  • WPC door frames: waterproof and termite proof, they will not rot where the frame meets a wet floor. The best choice for bathrooms, kitchens and ground floor rooms.
  • Solid wood frames: traditional hardwood frames that carry heavy main doors and look beautiful when polished to match a teak door.
  • Engineered wood frames: stable, straight and cost effective for bedroom and inner doors.

Frame sizes and measurement

Frames are sold by section size (the width and depth of the frame profile) and by the opening size. For most inner doors a section of around 100 mm x 60 mm (roughly 4 in x 2.5 in) is common, while main doors often use a wider section. To order, measure the finished wall opening width and height, and the wall thickness, and tell us the shutter thickness you plan to hang.

Tips for a long-lasting door frame

  • Use WPC frames wherever the bottom of the frame will touch water.
  • Keep a small gap between the frame foot and the finished floor, or seal it well.
  • Fix frames with proper hold fasts or anchor fasteners, not just mortar.
  • Treat wooden frames with a termite-resistant primer before fixing.
